Privacy & Data

What the site collects when you visit, and where the numbers on the state pages, the States map and the Permian Raptor Index come from.

Privacy

Local Energy counts visits with Fathom Analytics. It is the only analytics on the site, and it loads only on localenergy.com.

The site sets no cookies, and neither does Fathom's script. The one exception: if you pick light or dark with the theme switch, the site saves that choice on your device in localStorage ('le-theme'). It is not a cookie, and it is never sent anywhere. Fathom's script reads one browser setting, which is there only if you have opted out of Fathom.

There are no accounts, forms, ad networks or tracking pixels, and no other analytics. The fonts and pictures come from localenergy.com. The EIA fuel and crude prices are fetched by the site's server, not by your browser. The site is hosted on Cloudflare.

Episode pages show the video as a play button. Nothing loads from YouTube until you press it. Then the player loads from youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, and YouTube's own privacy policy covers the player from there.

Links to YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, X and the sources below are plain links. Those sites' own policies apply once you follow one.

Sources & method

Each figure on the state pages, the States page and the Permian Raptor Index carries a short line with its source and date. The full sources and notes are here.

States

Crude production is EIA's 2025 average; ranks are among the 50 states. Figures as of Oct 18, 2026. EIA's next monthly release is Oct 30.

The States map

The map on the States page shows the lower 48 states; Alaska and Hawaii aren't drawn (the EIA basins file has no Alaska basins). It uses an Albers equal-area projection, simplified for the screen, with the basins and plays trimmed at the coastline, so the basins' offshore parts and the Great Lakes are left off. The shaded areas at sea are the federal offshore planning areas in the Gulf of America and the Pacific (cut off at the map's edge); the Texas and California maps show the same areas off their coasts. Built Oct 19, 2026.

  2. Basins: EIA, U.S. Sedimentary Basins, the basins of the EIA shale plays as of May 6, 2011 (metadata updated Mar 10, 2016), compiled for EIA mostly from U.S. Geological Survey and state survey maps. Public domain. atlas.eia.gov

Permian Raptor Index

Every Monday we run the same search on CarGurus, Cars.com and Autotrader and count the used Raptors each one lists. CarGurus is the headline. The page is updated weekly, on Mondays.

What counts
Used Ford Raptors, every variant, including the Raptor R.
Where
Listings within 100 miles of Midland, TX 79701. Delivery and nationwide listings are switched off, so only trucks sitting in the area count.
When
Once a week, on Monday, on all three sites, with the same settings every week, so each count compares with the last.
Headline and cross-checks
The headline and the chart use the CarGurus count. Cars.com and Autotrader are cross-checks: if all three move the same way, the move is real. Each site counts differently, so their numbers don't match, and they are never added together or averaged. The cross-check shows the used Raptors within 100 miles of Midland on each site, same search.
Week over week
From the second Monday on, the index shows the change from the week before.
Data
Weekly count of public listings on CarGurus, with Cars.com and Autotrader as cross-checks. Each week's three counts and the date of the search are saved, so the history can be checked.
The chart
The sources differ. Aubrey's counts come from monthly posts on X; Local Energy's are CarGurus counts, searched the same way every week. Read the two as one story, not one series.
What it isn't
A forecast, or a Ford sales number. It's a street-level read on how freely money is moving in the basin, and it's meant to be a bit of fun.

The Permian Raptor Index is not affiliated with Ford Motor Company.
